European Statistical System

The European Statistical System (ESS) is the partnership between the statistical authority of the European Union, that is, the European Commission (Eurostat), and national statistical institutes (NSIs) and other national authorities in each European Union Member State in charge of the development, production and dissemination of European statistics. In addition to the European Union Member States, the ESS also includes the following Member States of the Central European Free Trade Agreement: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

National statistical institutes coordinate activities at the national level and act as a contact point for the European Commission (Eurostat) in relation to all the statistical issues of a particular Member State.

In addition to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics as the main producer, disseminator and coordinator of the official statistics system in the Republic of Croatia and as the main representative of the national statistical system before the European and international bodies competent for statistics, European statistics in the Republic of Croatia is also developed, produced and disseminated by other producers of official statistics.

The European Commission (Eurostat) publishes on its website the list of national statistical institutes and other national authorities in charge of the development, production and dissemination of European statistics.

The main task of the ESS is to provide users with quality statistical data on the European Union as a whole, as well as comparable statistical data on its Member States for the purpose of making quality decisions, primarily on the European Union policies.

LEGAL BASIS

Sectoral legislation, which regulates individual statistical areas in more detail, as well as other legal acts regulating issues relevant to the development, production and dissemination of European statistics are available on the Eurostat website.

EUROSTAT

Eurostat (the Statistical Office of the European Union) publishes on its website a variety of statistical data that are available in predefined tables, databases, publications, methodologies and on other useful links. Data, publications and information can be downloaded free of charge 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in the following three languages: English, German and French.

Users can find comparable and harmonised data for individual Member States of the European Union and aggregate data for the European Union as a whole, EU-15, EU-25 and the eurozone. Users can also access data on EFTA Member States (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), candidate countries (Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey), selected new independent countries from the area of the former Soviet Union as well as data on the USA and Japan.

EUROPEAN STATISTICAL DATA SUPPORT (ESDS) − USER ASSISTANCE

Eurostat collects data from the national statistical institutes and publishes official harmonised statistics of the European Union, the eurozone, Member States and candidate countries and ensures a comparable, reliable and objective portrayal of the changes in Europe.

The Croatian Bureau of Statistics closely cooperates with Eurostat. In addition to delivering our national statistical data to Eurostat, we also help our users access European statistics and provide user support in Croatian language.

Providing free access to data, Eurostat, in cooperation with national statistical institutes, has founded a network of national centres called the European Statistical Data Support (ESDS). The ESDS centre of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics provides a free of charge service that helps users find statistical information on the Eurostat website. In order to use the ESDS service, you need to register. This service does not include special data processing.

EUROSTAT WEBSITE

The Eurostat website provides free of charge online access to all its statistical databases and associated electronic publications. Eurostat databases cover the European Union, the European Union Member States, the eurozone, candidate countries and EFTA Member States. Very often, they also include comparable data on other major countries (the USA, Canada, Japan, Russia, etc.).

In the Statistics section, data are organised by the European Union policy indicators and by themes, including detailed background information. You can also use the search option by entering any keyword(s) relevant to the data you wish to find.

NEWS RELEASES

The latest European data are published as news releases , which cover euro-indicators (GDP, inflation, unemployment etc.) and other statistical themes (agriculture, environment, social topics, regions, research and development, etc.). In the Release Calendar, you can find the provisional release dates of publications and euro-indicators for the whole year.

Eurostat news releases can also be followed on Twitter.

STATISTICS EXPLAINED

Each set of statistics produced by Eurostat is described by one or several statistical articles in Statistics Explained. This online Wikipedia-style tool is an encyclopaedia on European Union statistics, a portal to further information for occasional and for regular users and a statistical glossary. Each statistical article includes links to relevant data tables and publications.

STATISTICS DATABASE

All data collected by Eurostat are available in the Statistics Database, which is a goldmine of information on EU Member States and other economies. It includes both predefined tables and tables with detailed data, which you can create according to your requirements (select indicators and extract the required data from the base).

The Statistics Database has its own search engine, which helps you find all the datasets and contains keyword(s) in the heading or description of the dataset.

PUBLICATIONS

Eurostat's publications are available online free of charge on the Eurostat website
in PDF. Publications are organised by types and can be searched by themes in the Statistics section following the Publications menu on the left.
