STUDENTS ENROLLED ON POSTGRADUATE SPECIALIST STUDIES, 2020/2021 ACADEMIC YEAR

In the 2020/2021 academic year, the total of 1 463 students were enrolled on postgraduate specialist studies.

Out of the total number of students, 73.0% were enrolled at the University of Zagreb, 8.1% at the University of Osijek, 7.9% at the University of Rijeka, 5.2% at the University of Split, 2.9% at the University North, 1.2% at the University of Zadar, 0.9% at the Libertas International University and 0.8% at the University of Slavonski Brod.

More women than men among students enrolled on postgraduate specialist studies

The share of women in the total number of students was 972 (66.4%). Observing by individual university, the University of Zadar had the highest share of female students (94.4%), followed by the Libertas International University (84.6%), the University of Osijek (69.5%), the University of Zagreb (68.1%), the University of Split (67.1%), the University North (55.8%) and the University of Rijeka (51.3%).

Social sciences – the most often chosen field of specialist studies

Regarding the scientific and artistic fields of studies, the most often chosen was the field of Social sciences (45.0%), followed by Biomedicine and health (42.2%), Interdisciplinary fields of science (5.9%), Engineering (3.5%), Artistic field (1.7%), Natural sciences (0.9%) and Biotechnical sciences (0.8%).

The largest number of students enrolled on postgraduate specialist studies in the 30 to 34 age group

According to 5-year age groups, the largest number of students was classified in the 30 – 34 age group (32.3%) and the smallest one in the under-24 age group (1.5%). There were 25.2% of students in the 25 – 29 age group, 17.0% in the 35 – 39 age group, 11.1% in the 40 – 44 age group, 7.9% in the 45 – 49 age group, 3.4% in the 50 – 54 age group and 1.6% in the 55-and-over age group.

By place of usual residence, 98.1% of students were residents of the Republic of Croatia and 1.9% were residents of other countries. By citizenship, out of the total number of students, 97.7% were the citizens of the Republic of Croatia and 2.3% of foreign countries. Out of the total number of Croatian citizens, 95.1% had previously graduated in the Republic of Croatia and 4.9% in other countries.

The largest number of students enrolled on postgraduate specialist studies employed in Human health and social work activities

Out of the total number of students, 97.0% were employed and 3.0% unemployed. Out of the total number of employed students, the largest number were employed in Human health and social work activities (45.7%), in Public administration and defence; compulsory social security (13.5%), in Professional, scientific and technical activities (8.9%), in Education (7.8%), in Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (4.9%),  in Financial and insurance activities (4.6%), in Manufacturing activities (2.1%), in Information and communication activities (1.8%), while in all other activities they accounted for 10.7%.

Employers mostly paid the costs of studies

Employers paid the costs of studies for 54.7% of students, 44.4% of students paid for the study themselves, while 0.9% were classified in the category Other.

NOTES ON METHODOLOGY

Sources and methods of data collection

Data are the result of the annual data processing on students enrolled on postgraduate specialist studies. They are collected through the questionnaire titled the Registration Sheet for Students Enrolled on Postgraduate Specialist Studies (ŠV-30 form), which is filled in by students at the enrolment on each year of postgraduate specialist studies.

Coverage and comparability

This statistical survey covers all students enrolled on postgraduate specialist studies at institutions of higher education in the Republic of Croatia in the 2020/2021 academic year.

Data are comparable to data from previous years.

Definitions and explanations

Students presented in this First Release are enrolled on the postgraduate specialist study in line with the Act on Scientific Activity and Higher Education (NN, Nos 123/03, 198/03, 105/04, 174/04, 02/07, 46/07, 45/09, 63/11, 94/13, 139/13, 101/14, 60/15 and 131/17).

Postgraduate study programmes are classified according to the Rule Book of Scientific and Artistic Fields (NN, Nos 118/09, 82/12, 32/13 and 34/16).

Institution of higher education – any institution of higher education authorised to organise and implement courses of study, as well as scientific research, highly professional or artistic work. Institutions of higher education are university and adjoining faculties and art academies as well as polytechnics and schools of higher education. Institutions of higher education may be public and private.

University is an institution that establishes and conducts university and interdisciplinary studies in at least two areas of scientific or artistic activity in a number of fields, as an autonomous and integrated process, indirectly or through its faculties, art academies and departments.

Faculty is an institution of higher education, a component part of a university, where university studies are organised and conducted and where scientific and professional work in one or more scientific or professional areas are developed. Professional studies can also be conducted there.

Art academy is an institution of higher education, a component part of a university, where artistic study is organised and conducted, and where top artistic endeavours and scientific activity in the field of art are nourished. Professional studies can also be conducted there.

University department is a component part of a university where university courses are taught, and scientific, artistic or professional work in a particular filed of science or an interdisciplinary area are developed.

The university may organise a postgraduate specialist study which shall last from one to two years and by which a university specialist title for a particular area (Spec.) shall be awarded.

The postgraduate study may also be conducted in co-operation with scientific institutes (interdisciplinary study).

Academic year starts on 1 October of the current year and ends on 30 September of the following calendar year.
